STAGE 1 : INTRODUCTION

When building a house, you always start with the foundation. You can say the same thing about making beats. How do you make a good drumloop? How do you get that extra ‘edge’ in your mix by using effects? Furthermore, you’ll be taught how to use your DAW or software, you’ll get tips about finding the best free samples and how you can best remodel your home studio. You will hear stories about the history of Hip-Hop as well. Lastly, we will look at your personal ambitions and set up personal learning goals for you.

STAGE 2 : SOUND CHOICE

What is sound really? How do our ears work? These are important questions to ensure your basic understanding of sound. You will learn how to choose your sounds, by means of an instrument or by sampling the sound in your program. This also takes into account the different urban music styles: which sounds make each genre unique and how you apply this in your productions yourself? You will also have learn the basics of music theory: how do you make melodies and fitting chords? Which arrangements, chord progressions and sounds work best in your style of music?

STAGE 3 : PRODUCTION AND MIXING

Having learned music and sound theory you will dive even deeper into the practice of production and mixing in your software of choice. You learn about essential effects and how to apply them in practical lessons. We learn how to use effects in a creative way, but also how to make a good mix using the various techniques available to your program. How do you get a groovy and unique drum sound for the beats you are making? How can you stretch and sample fragments? How do you use reverb and delay creatively? Turn the knobs and you will know how this shapes the sound of your beats.

STAGE 4 : YOUR FINAL ASSIGNMENT

After finalizing the third semester you master the knowledge and techniques to make your own track in your DAW or software. In the fourth and last semester of this course we are going to look at what could be better in your mix. We will also be talking about mastering tracks. The lessons also focus on the release of your productions. What is the best way to contact a label? Which aspects influence the correct development of your network? How do you go through the process of going from the studio to the stage? In short, everything to provide you with the fundamentals to become a serious Hip-Hop artist.
